Local opportunities to serve
Westwood has a long history of being involved locally — from supporting individuals, groups, or refuge families; to building or providing housing for those less fortunate. Families Moving Forward (FMF)
Ages: Jr. High (w/parents) Sr. High-Adults
Task: (FMF) is a faith based housing organization for homeless families in transition. Westwood supports this ministry by providing 30-40 volunteers to host, supervise overnight room accommodations, nutritious meals, and various other tasks. Kinship Ages: Adults/Families
Task: Westwood’s Kinship Ministry provides area youth with a consistent mentoring relationship that supports healthy social, emotional and intellectual development. Loaves and Fishes Ages: Adults
Task: The Westwood Loaves and Fishes team prepares and serves a meal to those in need at River of Life Lutheran Church in north Minneapolis every other first Friday of the month and all 5th Fridays of each year, for approximately 5 hours. Contact: Joanne Bell 952-939-8039, belljm@comcast.net
Redeemer After School Program (RAP) Ages: All
Task: Westwood volunteers spend time with mentoring the neighborhood kids in the Harrison community. Activities include: social interaction, homework help, game playing, and preparing and serving a basic meal. Contact: Susie Fjelstad 952-484-5657, sbfjelstad@yahoo.com
Redeemer House Construction Ages: 16-Adults
Task: Redeemer is demolishing an older structure this fall, and constructing a new Habitat For Humanity style home, in the Harrison Neighborhood of north Minneapolis. Redeemer Lutheran Church Worship Ages: All
Task: Westwood attendees can grow a deeper relationship with our partners in north Minneapolis by worshipping at Redeemer once a month and staying for fellowship hour. Worship at Redeemer begins at 10:30 AM. Contact: Pastor Jason Van Hunnik 952-767-5575, j.vanhunnik@westwoodlutheran.org
STEP (St. Louis Park Emergency Program)
Ages: Jr. High-Adults
Task: Westwood Service includes monthly sorting of food or any other tasks needed by STEP (with up to 15 people per session). Contact: Kathy Pickard 952-546-1576, kapick21@gmail.com
Tanzanian ‘Kids Against Hunger’ Ages: All
Task: In February, Westwood packages 100,000 meals, primarily sent to Dodoma, Tanzania in support of 150 AIDS orphans from Arusha Road Church. Wayside Supportive Housing/Monday Amigos
Ages: Jr. High-Adults
Task: Onsite volunteers host elementary youth and staff from Wayside Supportive Housing; while their mothers participate in Wayside education opportunities. Offsite volunteers provide care for infants/toddlers at Wayside Supportive Housing nursery.

Worship at the Swahili Speaking Congregation in Minneapolis Ages: All
Task: As ministry support to immigrants from Tanzania, Westwood’s relationship continues to grow with a starter program within the Swahili speaking congregation at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Contact: Eileen Hawkinson 952-935-2662, eedhawk@gmail.com
