Tanzania Mission Outreach

Westwood Outreach Ministries - Tanzania Mission Outreach Team

Purpose | To live out our call to discipleship by witnessing to Jesus Christ in word and action through our work in our community and world. "What does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8

Relationships | Following Micah 6:8 we will develop relationships that embody the following:

• Compassion/Kindness work

• Justice work

• Evangelism

Principles | Four primary principles guide our Outreach Ministry: Focus, Relationships, Depth and Accountability

Questions | If you have any questions or would like to be part of this Mission Outreach Team, please contact Pastor Jason VanHunnik or call 952.545.5623

A Tanzania Mission Outreach Team was recently formed to examine Westwood’s ongoing partnership with ArushaRoadChurch, and to explore options for spreading our outreach in the Dodoma, Tanzania area. ArushaRoadChurch works very closely with the community of Dodoma to meet the needs not only of their parishioners, but all who need God’s love and care throughout the impoverished region. Working with ArushaRoadChurch as well as other focused community partners ensures we can “make a difference” in Tanzania, and specifically the Dodoma region. Careful consideration was given to a variety of additional mission outreach partners and four were selected based on their role in serving a specific need within the community. The Tanzania Mission Outreach Team chose four primary areas of need to address: immediate hunger issues, health and HIV/AIDS needs, economic self-sufficiency, and education.

Arusha Road Church

At Westwood, we are committed to building on the relationship already established at ArushaRoadChurch. With the support and prayers of the Westwood congregation, ArushaRoadChurch has been able to make considerable progress on finishing their church building, recently supporting installation of doors and windows. Based on the

needs outlined in their 5-year strategic plan we continue to support their capital needs, ministries and community outreach programs, including AIDS orphan ministries, and school scholarships. A group of 16 from Westwood visited ArushaRoadChurch in 2004, with subsequent exchange trips anticipated.

Community Partners

Feeding Children International

To meet the needs of the poorest of the poor, who do not even have enough food to eat today, we are partnering with Feeding Children International – a local program that packages nutritionally balanced meals comprised of rice, soy, dried vegetables and flavoring. There are many hands-on opportunities for Westwood in supporting this partnership.

Global Health Ministries

From a health perspective, we selected Global Health Ministries, and specifically the DodomaChristianMedicalCenter – a 60-bed hospital project currently under construction – that is critically needed in that region. The project director is a doctor from St. Paul (John Toso) along with his wife. We will also designate funds towards AIDS prevention and care. Volunteer opportunities abound locally to support this agency.

Heifer International

To foster economic self-sufficiency, we will be working with Heifer International. Heifer International provides food-producing animals to families in need, resulting in improved household food security, the possibility of generating income by selling surplus products, with even greater potential as animals reproduce. To avoid creating dependence, Heifer Project provides an animal on the condition that the family passes on one or more of the offspring to another family in need, along with the training and experience they gain. This ensures accountability between families and fosters a sense of sharing and caring for one another. Additionally, a family’s dignity and self-respect are restored as they are helped to help themselves. Opportunities to be involved in this ministry will be highlighted throughout the year.

O
peration Bootstrap

Operation Bootstrap is an organization focusing on education. Operation Bootstrap spoke with the Arusha Road congregation to determine which school a majority of the children from the church attend. We will be supporting the Kiwanja cha NdegePrimary School by assisting them in building two new desperately-needed classrooms.
