SOS: Gordy and Linda Meyer
SOS: Gordy and Linda MeyerWritten by Pastor Bruce
This spring as you enjoy the beautiful outdoor gardens and landscapes surrounding Westwood, give special thanks to Gordy and Linda Meyer, who oversee Westwood’s outdoor gardening ministry. Their volunteer time, garden knowledge, and leadership is a gift they offer up to God and to all of us.
Gordy earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Minnesota in soil sciences. Nearing retirement he is now working 3 days a week for Barr Engineering in human resources. Linda, who is blessed with an artistic eye, had a long career as a dental hygienist and followed that up with working part time at Joann Fabrics, a job from which she just recently retired. They love gardening and their own garden is something to behold. They make the perfect team to head up the volunteers that do Westwood’s outdoor gardening, including the spring and fall clean up, the planting of annuals, watering, and ongoing landscape design. After our recent building renovation you may have noticed the re-landscaping on the north side of our sanctuary and on the south “island” in front of our sanctuary entrance. New shrubs have been planted and on the island some old junipers have been removed and ornamental grasses planted.
Gordy and Linda have been members at Westwood since 1975. In addition to gardening, you will see them volunteering as greeters and Linda working as a quilter and helping set up and serve for funerals. They have been richly blessed and they have been a rich blessing to others. On May 15th Gordy and Linda are anchoring a panel of gardening experts for the Westwood Adult Ministry May program, a panel which includes Stan Crist, Keith Bergquist, and a good friend of the Meyers, Bob Mugaas, retired U of MN Extension Horticulturalist and a veteran radio call in garden show expert. It starts with a noon potluck followed by the panel. All adults are welcome, regardless of age. Come with your gardening questions.
This spring is the earliest most of us can remember our gardens beginning to burst out in bloom. What a glorious Easter we will have! This spring, summer, and fall, comes to worship early or linger on after worship to walk quietly and peacefully through the Westwood Gardens.
