Each week I am fortunate to work with Rex Harrison. Rex volunteers behind the scenes but is an important part of our worship experience each Sunday. For about the past two years, he has been printing all our worship bulletins. For those of you who know Rex, you’ll all agree he’s not a “sit around” kind of guy. As a retired electrician, he felt called to help out at Westwood when he saw an announcement in our SALT form asking for help with our weekly printing. As he said, “Westwood had a need, and I had the time.” Coincidentally his father was a printer, so Rex feels he has come around full circle to continue in his father’s footsteps. To find someone who is able to come and help out every week has truly been a blessing. In addition, you may also see him helping out as an usher, and for those of you who have had the privilege to sit near Rex on a Sunday morning, it certainly is a treat to hear him sing.
Rex grew up in Albert Lea and came to the cities to attend Dunwoody. He and his wife Diane have been members here at Westwood for about 28 years. Diane is a sonographer for Park Nicollet (she performs ultrasound testing) and continues to work in that capacity. Their son Romone was recently married and lives in Chicago. Rex has become, in his words, “a house husband” and keeps busy with all sorts of home tasks, including cooking. One of Rex’s favorite things to do is to play golf. How many of us can say we’ve played golf in Scotland? It was a recent vacation that gave Rex this great opportunity. With summer on the horizon and a very warm spring, Rex is getting in as much golf as possible, but he still finds time to make his weekly trek over to Westwood.
Rex says he enjoys doing something that helps out the church. In addition he says one of the best things is that he has “made new friends with a great office staff.” When I asked Rex if he had any words of wisdom for all of us, his response was “Retirement – try it, you’ll like it!” Thanks Rex, for spending part of your retirement here at Westwood each week.
