Asher [ash-er] -n : Fortunate. Blessed. Happy.
In early July, I was fortunate enough to spend five blessed days with a happy team named The Band Asher. Jonathon (J.T.), Jake and Athena are part of the band (appropriately named) that led worship with 70+ children and volunteer leaders in Westwood’s Sanctuary during Vacation Bible School. Jake and Athena strummed guitars and sang while Jonathon backed them up on vocals and taught motions to help the children remember the words to the songs.
“1…2...3...4...Where do I go, when I need a shelter? Where do I go, when I need a friend? Where do I go, when I need some helpin’? Where do I go? Back on my knees again!”
The VBS songs all fit the theme of Daniel’s Courage in Captivity but “Where Do I Go?” ended up being the camper’s favorite one. It also happens to be the kind of song that’s guaranteed to stick in your head long after VBS ends. In fact, I’m still singing it! The campers also learned songs that they will continue to sing in church for years to come. (“Amazing Grace” “How Can I Keep from Singing”)
Summer can be a busy time for everyone and this team was no exception, so I asked them why they took the time to volunteer during VBS.
“I was once a camper and I really liked it. When I was done being a camper, I thought I should return the favor and help kids come to camp and enjoy it as much as I did. It was fun to see all the smiling faces.” ~Jake Zell
“I just really wanted to help out with VBS!”~ J.T. Zell
“I remember VBS from when I was younger and I always had a great time! Helping with the music was a great opportunity for me and it was really fun to re-live those times and see the kids enjoy it, as well.” ~Athena Aase
Yep, that’s The Band Asher. Fortunate. Blessed. Happy. Thanks for passing it on!
