Special services

Lent

As early as the mid-fourth century, Christians have observed a time of preparation before the Easter celebration. The Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts for 40 days. The forty days of Lent recall the 40 day fast of Jesus in the wilderness after his baptism (Matthew 4:2, Luke 4:1-2) and Moses' 40 day fast on Mount Sinai (Exodus 34:28). It is a time of simplicity and preparation.

During Lent, Westwood has mid-week worship services, including Ash Wednesday, on Wednesdays at 12 and 7 PM. Palm Sunday services will be held on Palm Sunday at 9 and 10:30 AM with procession of palms and Sunday School children singing. Maundy Thursday services will be held at 12 and 7 PM. Good Friday services will be held at 12, 6:30 and 8 PM with music and drama at all services. Easter services will be held on Easter Sunday with traditional services at 8, 9:30 and 11 AM.

Advent

The season of Advent marks the beginning of the church year and comprises the four weeks before Christmas. The church has observed a season of preparation before Christmas since the appearance of regulations on fasting issued by Bishop Perpetuus of Tours in 490 C.E.

During Advent, Westwood has mid-week evening vesper worship services on Wednesdays at 6:30 PM, with prayer, scripture and pastoral reflection. Communion (at the table) will be served each week.
