9th Grade Confirmation

9th Grade Confirmation:

Sermon Conversations & Lenten Worship Booklet:

  •  Total of 6 Sermon Conversations throughout the year.
  • Sermon conversations are conversations between parent/caring adult and confirmand. Sermon conversations consist of reading the lessons before worship and discussing a few questions, then discussing the remainder of the questions after the service. Forms printable here.
  • Lenten Worship Booklet is desinged to foster conversation in small group about the Christian journey from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday. Each student is to attend worship each Wednesday night in Lent as well as Maunday Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Service Opportunities:

  • 9th graders need a total of 10 service opportunities throughout the year (pink postcards).
  • If a parent/caring adult serves alongside the confirmand the parent/caring adult gets “credit” too. This means that the family would have 5 joint service opportunities to fulfill this expectation.
  • One of these Service opportunities will be an Elder Wisdom Interview with an elder person in the congregation. These conversations are about an hour in length and are meant to foster relationships between multiple generations at Westwood. These will be completed between October and December.

Faith Mentoring

  • Each 9th grader will select a faith mentor of their choice, someone other than a parent, to have a mentoring relationship with during the spring of their 9th grade year. This person should be someone whom the 9th grader sees as a strong person of faith, and not just a warm body.
  • Options include, but are not limited to: Baptismal sponsor, past Sunday school teacher, elder wisdom adult from 8th or 9th grade, a faithful young adult from the congregation, etc.

Faith Statement

  • Each 9th grader will write or present a statement of faith via another creative medium.
  • They will begin the work on this faith statement in the spring of their 9th grade year, and they will be presented before the rite of confirmation in their 10th grade year.
  • As a part of this committment, each 9th grader will hear a faith statement from several caring adults in their lives. Their confirmation guides, youth director, parent(s), mentor, and perhaps a few others along the way. This is a rich way of passing on the faith, thru language spoken directly from close caring adults.
