Year of the Bible

2007-2008

All are welcome to join in Westwood's Year of the Bible, as we study, talk together, and discover how it is that Lutherans interpret the Word of God. The classes, small groups, worship and special events will encourage all ages and stages of Christians to take scripture seriously, not literally. How is it that we incorporate biblical perspectives and values into our daily decisions at home, work, and in the social and political arenas today?

In Worship...

We will lift up one book of the Bible each month. Following the church year, that book will either be preached on or highlighted in hymnody.

In Classes... (Sundays at 9:45)

Sept. 9 and 16: Darrell Joddock, Professor of Lutheran Studies at Gustavus Adolphus College, on
"The Lutheran Lens Through Which We View Scripture."

Fall will also include:
Terry Fretheim's Genesis videos
Advent text study of Matthew.

Lee Snook, retired professor from Luther Seminary, will be our Bell Lecturer this year, Sunday mornings in February on "The Holy Spirit in Scripture", followed by a study of John.

Watch for the Adult Education brochure for topics and dates for both Sundays at 9:45 and Wednesday evenings.

Children and Youth Too!

Rotation Sunday School (Pathway Adventure) classes will continue to teach the Bible, but this year we'll be emphasizing memory of the 'verse of the month', learning scripture through song, and showing the congregation what we've learned on Family Worship Days.

Confirmation Students will also be learning the 'verse of the month' and participating in Bible games and special events in addition to their regular Bible and Catechism studies

Sr. High Youth will be studying and discussing the Book of the Month in some Wednesday and Sunday morning sessions, in addition to participating in the intergenerational special events.
